In Gilmer County, Summer Opportunities are great for students to get experience, learn new things, and give you important skills like leadership, cooperation, communication, work ethic and plenty more. Opportunities include jobs or internships, and even school-based summer programs.
Upward Bound
Upward Bound, which is a program from the University of North Georgia (UNG), offers academic support, college application assistance, career counseling, enrichment programs, and tutoring during the academic year. In the summer, the University of Georgia hosts the Steps-to-College (S2C) program for over 100 multilingual high school students, providing summer enrichment and credit toward graduation. S2C, created in 1999, takes place on the UNG’s Dahlonega campus in June, teaching classes like economics and American government.

Volunteering
There are always volunteer jobs that are in need of a helping hand, like volunteering at the local library or shelter to help out. Our Gilmer County library always has fun STEM activities and other things during summer, mainly June, months. Internships are also very helpful and they benefit not only the company you’re working for but you as well! You get on-the-job training experience and it looks good for future jobs and careers you want to get, because you’ll have experience.

SAT/ACT Boot Camp
There is also an SAT/ACT boot camp that you can sign up for. Which the SAT is for juniors and seniors. This summer opening is perfect for rising juniors taking the test for the first time, for seniors and other high school students who have already taken the exam but wish to improve their score, and for younger students who want to start preparing early. When we have dates, we will post them.
Get a summer job
Plus, with all these new businesses, like Aldi, Five Below and Mavis Tires in the Gilmer area, job opportunities are high and businesses are in need of workers. From restaurants to working with cars, jobs are popping up everywhere in Gilmer. These jobs may not last forever, but they give you experience for your future career. You can go to a business and ask for an application or call a business. Make sure you have a resume, job history, references and all your certifications. Your references are people who know you and can tell an employer positive things about you but family is not the best choice for a professional reference because they can be biased. References help potential employers form a picture of what you’re like to work with, what your strengths and skills are, and ultimately why you’re the best person for the job.
