Let’s consider trying something new this year. Our caps and gowns have always been purple, but many seniors have expressed a desire for a change. I interviewed some of Gilmer High School seniors about their opinion on white cap and gowns. Sarai Solis-Sanchez and Melanie Leal-Morado both agreed stating white cap and gowns look cleaner giving a more elegant look. Sarai also mentioned white matches with everything. Since white is one of Gilmer High School’s colors, it makes sense to switch to white gowns. White is not only eye-catching, making graduates more noticeable, but it also symbolizes new beginnings and achievements, making it a fitting choice for graduation. Additionally, white gowns can give a clean and modern look for graduation. This change could also create a unique and memorable experience for the graduating class being the first to graduate with white cap and gowns here at GHS.
Our Gilmer High School has kept the tradition of having purple caps and gowns. Why would we be the ones to break the tradition? Sure sometimes change is fun and new but in this case tradition is good. Ellijay itself is a very traditional town much like Gilmer High School. Overall graduating should be focused on the students and if we were to change our cap and gown colors. The attention would be redirected towards the sudden change in the colors of our graduating attire. Along with that, white is one of our Gilmer colors but it is also the least shown given most of our sports equipment , uniforms, signs, etc. Plus administrators are known for their bubbly Bobcat pride so they may not like the change. I interviewed two fellow senior students who both agreed with keeping it traditional. Jonathan Agulair Espinoza mentioned that purple is more traditional and Juana Teccero Teccero followed up by saying white would get dirty easily. I firmly believe that we should stay with purple caps and gowns.
